    What is Acute Rehabilitation?

Acute rehabilitation is therapies, exercises, and check-ups that are provided to patients after a sudden and severe injury. Most patients begin in an acute care hospital setting, which treats the injury and prevents any further complications or death. Following this, patients may be transferred to an acute rehabilitation facility that specializes in long-term care, physical, occupational, and/or speech therapies.

Acute rehabilitation differs from a nursing home or subacute rehabilitation facility in several ways.

    • Acute care physical therapy is provided for multiple hours a day, several times a day. As opposed to three to four times a week in subacute rehabilitation.
    • Acute care nurses are available around the clock to care for complex medical needs.
    • Respiratory therapists are available to provide ongoing treatment for acute lung injury and acute respiratory failure.

For more information on the differences between acute rehabilitation and subacute care, read our guide on the differences between acute and subacute care and what is involved in subacute care.
